Court of Justice of EU recognises the Latvian authorisation scheme for acquisition of agricultural land directly discriminatory on grounds of nationality.

On 11 June 2020 the Court of Justice of the European Union recognised as discriminatory and contrary to the EU rules the provisions of the Law on the privatisation of land in rural areas providing that for a legal entity to acquire agricultural land its legal representatives and shareholders, who are citizens of other members states, shall register as residents of Latvia and shall have knowledge of the Latvian language corresponding to the level, which enables them to communicate at least on every day and on professional topics.
